This third edition of the Basin-wide Environmental Watering Strategy was prepared in consultation with the Basin states and Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder (CEWH) and with the contributions and input of First Nations peoples. It builds on the solid foundations of the past ten years and adds new science and knowledge with the aim of maximising the benefits of environmental water. Applying the four ecological themes of river flows and connectivity, native vegetation, waterbirds, and native fish, the Strategy sets the measure for ecosystem health at a Basin-scale.
In this Strategy we take further steps to respect the connections of First Nations peoples to water and country, and to include First Nations peoples and their knowledge in planning decisions for environmental water. While the focus of this Strategy is on environmental outcomes, we recognise the great opportunity of social and economic benefits to Basin communities that come with well-planned environmental water management and deliveries.
