This document reflects a commitment to improve the representation of First Nations interests and objectives in the third version of the Strategy. The outcomes identified in this document, if fully implemented, represent a significant improvement in the way First Nations rights and interests are considered in Basin-scale planning for environmental water.
The Murray Lower Darling Rivers Indigenous Nations (MLDRIN) developed this document in collaboration with a range of First Nations people and organisations and with the support of the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA). MLDRIN hosted a series of in-person and online gatherings that supported involvement of Traditional Owners from 21 individual Nations. Gatherings with multiple Nation representatives and direct dialogue with Traditional Owners clarified key shared outcomes, objectives and priorities for the planning and delivery of environmental water. MLDRIN also reviewed outputs from previous First Nations input to Basin-scale water planning, such as the First Nations Environmental Water Guidance (FNEWG) project (conducted between 2018–2021), and other key statements and research relating to First Nations involvement in environmental
water planning.
