Poster given at the Murray–Darling Water and Environment Research Program (MD-WERP) Annual Symposium 2023
Climate change projections indicate that the number of severe fire weather days will increase in the future. Bushfires have been identified as a threat to water availability in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) and estimated impacts of historical events vary considerably. There is no previous assessment of future impact of fires on water availability.
The research aims to evaluate how bushfires impact catchment runoff under current and future climates by:
- establishing methods to generate future projections of fires
- simulating the fire impacts on water availability
- incorporating fire effect in future water resource projections.
