The Murray–Darling Basin Authority’s (MDBA) water bird survey is an annual survey of waterbird populations and recruitment at 38 important wetland and river sites in the Murray–Darling Basin. The University of New South Wales (UNSW) is contracted to conduct the survey on the MDBA behalf over 2014–2023. The UNSW runs the survey through October and November each year.
The AWS dataset is used in conjunction with the Eastern Australian Waterbird Survey (EAWS) program, commenced in 1983 and operated annually by UNSW. The MDBA has adapted this EAWS dataset to identify points within the Murray--Darling Basin Boundary for analysis.
