Project: Murray–Darling Basin Sustainable Yields 2 (MDBSY2)
This document describes how the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) has incorporated the advice of the Independent Hydroclimate Science Expert Panel (IHSEP) into the Sustainable Yields project and how it may incorporate the advice into broader climate-related functions and initiatives.
In September 2022, the Murray-Darling Basin Officials Committee agreed to establish the IHSEP to provide advice on future hydroclimate scientific methods to meet identified policy and planning needs, including consideration of existing approaches. Three deliverables were sought from IHSEP:
- A review of existing methods and approaches to hydroclimate modelling in the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB).
- An initial guidance report focusing on the methodologies, limitations and resources required to deliver the suite of hydroclimate scenarios and provided recommendations to develop basin-wide hydroclimate futures.
- A longer-term guidance report building on the initial guidance report and considering a range of approaches for exploring hydroclimate variability and the potential changes to water resource planning and policy to 2050.
The initial guidance was intended to directly inform the approach to Sustainable Yields, which has been developed to inform the Basin Plan Review (BPR)
This Review highlights the ample benefit in greater inter-jurisdictional cooperation in the development and delivery of hydroclimate science programs in the future.
