Decision makers often face very complex systems and overwhelming amounts of information, making it hard for them to make good decisions. The sheer volume and complexity of this information creates problems. Too much or irrelevant data can lead to confusion, mistakes, and misjudgements, making it harder for managers to understand what's really happening and make effective decisions.
This research looked at the thousands of indicators used to manage water in the Murray–Darling Basin and created a scientific method to narrow them down to a smaller, more useful set.
Key findings / recommendations:
-
The study found that just six to eight key environmental water requirements (EWRs) can explain most of the changes in ecosystem health across the Basin under difference climate and policy scenarios.
-
A carefully chosen small set of indicators can be just as effective as the full list for understanding ecological outcomes.
-
By using simpler models, we can reduce unnecessary complexity while still keeping most of the important information, making it easier for decision-makers to focus on what truly matters without being overwhelmed.
