The Basin Plan 2012 (the Basin Plan) requires that each Basin State report on “the achievement of environmental outcomes at the asset scale” (Schedule 12, Matter 8) every five years. These assessments, along with basin-scale Matter 7 reporting, provide an opportunity to evaluate how environmental water, and the policies and strategies that manage it, are contributing to progressing the environmental objectives of the Basin Plan. Evidence from these assessments informs the 2025 evaluation and the 2026 review of the Basin Plan.
Queensland’s 2024 Matter 8 reporting is structured around the high-level Chapter 8 Basin Plan environmental objectives. The assessment is based on the assets, functions and objectives detailed in Queensland’s long-term watering plans, and uses a range of information sources, including hydrological and ecological models, water plan performance reporting, climate change projections, research project results and an aquatic ecosystem threats assessment.
