Agriculture full-time equivalent (FTE) and headcount, by Local Government Area (LGA), within and outside the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB).
The data is derived by Marsden Jacobs Associates (MJA) from Australian Tax Office (ATO) business activity statement data (BAS) within Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Datalab. This data represents the aggregate statistics of confidentialised BAS data, for agricultural businesses within and outside the MDB.
In this data, the measure of 'sum' represents the total number of employees in agriculture in an LGA. The measures of 'median' and 'mean" represent the median and mean numbers of employees across agricultural businesses in an LGA. The measure of 'counts' represents the number of agricultural businesses in an LGA. The LGA of a business is based on the location of its Australian Business Number (ABN). The industry classification of a business is based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) code for BAS purposes, at ANZSIC 2-digit level. The Not Applicable (NA) values are due to the presence of zero observations in an LGA (e.g. in a remote region), or the presence of a low number of observations in an LGA, resulting in the data to be suppressed due to ABS confidentiality rules.
The key data quality considerations are as follows:
- The BAS data is based on the reported location of business, which may not always be the same as the location of business activity.
- The employment data only records employees, not self-employment.
The column headings in the data sheet are described in the metadata.
