Turnover, Expenses and Wages by Local Government Area (LGA), within and outside the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB).
This data is derived by Marsden Jacobs Associates (MJA) from Australian Tax Office (ATO) business activity statement (BAS) data within Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Datalab. The data represents the aggregate statistics of confidentialised BAS data, for businesses within and outside the Murray–Darling Basin. The LGA of a business is based on the location of its Australian Business Number (ABN). The industry classification of a business is based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) code for BAS purposes, at ANZSIC 2-digit level. The No Applicable (NA) values are due to the presence of zero observations in an LGA (e.g. in a remote region), or the presence of a low number of observations in an LGA, for which the data is suppressed due to ABS confidentiality rules. The dollar values are in nominal terms.
The key data quality considerations are as follows:
- The BAS data is based on the reported locations of businesses, which may not be the same as the locations of their business activities.
- Changes in data reporting requirements mean that expenditure data from BAS is only reliable up to 2017.
- The impact of inflation on the $75k threshold for reporting BAS data results in ‘bracket creep’ over time, therefore the count of businesses reporting is inconsistent.
- Introduction of new reporting thresholds (now $10 million) also creates inconsistencies in reporting.
- Not all data is available at the LGA level. Where this occurs, data is reported based on more general relationships, which has limitations. For example, BAS data extraction confidentiality rules mean some industries and LGAs experience under recording of data.
- Businesses may not self-report change of business activity, resulting in inconsistencies.
- The employment data only records employees, not self-employment.
The metadata provides information about the column headings, the ANZSIC code and the LGA code.
